The following was written by a friend of mine and just thought I would share it.
What is a Friend? I will tell you. It is a person with whom you dare to be yourself. Your soul can be naked with him. He seems to ask of you to put on nothing, only to be what you are. He does not want to be better or to be worse. When you are with him, you feel as a prisoner feels who has been declared innocent. You do not have to be on your guard. You can say what you think,as long as it is genuinely you. He understands those contradictions in your nature that lead to others to misjudge you. With him you breathe freely. You can avow your little vanities and envies and hates and vicious sparks, your meamess, and absurdities. And open them up to him, they are lost, dissolved an the white ocean of his loyalty. He understands. You do not have to be careful. You can abuse him, neglect him, tolerate him. Best of all,you can keep still with him. It makes no matter. He likes you. He is like fire that purges to the bone. He understands. You can weep with him, laugh with him,sin with him, pray with him.
Through it all-and underneath-he sees, knows, and loves you. A friend? What is a friend? Just one, I repeat, with whom you dare to be yourself.

Father's Day Gift Ideas

Father’s Day is coming up really soon. Do you spend days, weeks or even months trying to figure out what to get your dad for father’s day? Do you have one of those fathers that has everything or isn’t into much? I have one of those. Most mom’s are pretty easy to buy for. At least, that’s been my experience. Last year I struggled for months trying to figure out a gift for my father on father’s day. I wanted to do something different then the usual…A few years before this, I had purchased a program to make a slide show for a retirement party of a boss myself and my fellow co-workers were going to miss greatly when she retired. We wanted to give her something fun and unique to remember us by. I could have used PowerPoint to do the slideshow, but the version we had back then was a bit limited. So, I purchased this program called Media Show. It had a few features that PowerPoint didn’t offer back then, like the ability to upload music from a CD and more of a variety of transitions and settings.
We contacted our “office photographer” (not really her title, but she was always the one there with the camera at all our office parties and gatherings. And, she did such a great job!!). She was delighted to help us out. Anyway, to make a long story short, she took pictures of all of us all around the office, meeting rooms, cubicles, and we even invated the retirees office while she was out for the day. Everyone wrote up their personal message to the retiree and sent it to me to add to the slideshow. We uploaded one of her favorite songs that played throughout the show. We added funny comments to the pictures to make it fun. After it was all put together, we played it at her retirement party. It was the hit of the party!! Everyone loved it.
So, last year, I put together a slide show for my father. I used pictures from back as far as when he married our mother and included all 5 of us kids growing up and then added the grandchildren. I ended it with a collage of picture of his entire family “tree” starting with him and mom at the top. I used about 5 different songs in the show, all of which talked about how great a dad he was. I then burned it to a cd and gave it to my sister (who was down visiting when I finished it up). I didn’t get to see his face when he watched it because we live 600 miles apart, but my sisters both told me he just loved it and it brought tears to his eyes.
The whole time I was creating this show, I was able to take a walk down memory lane and remember all the good times we had growing up. My father wasn’t perfect, and not all times were good, but father’s day is meant to honor your father for all the good times you had with him. This father’s day, do something special and from the heart. I have created a Squidoo lens about Father’s day, giving a brief history along with some of the songs I had used on the media show that you can listen to while viewing the lens. There are also some shirts and other gift ideas from my store on the site if you care to take a look. You can view the lens at Father's Day.
